My brother was kind enough to take several photos of the destruction in and around the home where I grew up. He’s had to run to UAB to upload them, as major infrastructure is still (and will be for some time) completely out. It’s awful to see so much of my old neighborhood destroyed, but the most surreal thing is the ability to see so much of the sky in the photos. For the twenty-three years I was there, dense forest was the reality.
Luckily all of my family made it through the storms without a scratch, but unfortunately one of our neighbors passed away. The McCrorys have always been great neighbors—very kind, very helpful, and unbelievably funny. They’ve been in my thoughts since I heard the news, and I wish them the best through an undoubtedly tough time.
My grandmother’s neighbor. From what I understand, the family left just 20 minutes earlier to get everyone to work and school.
What remains of my Landcruiser ‘collection’. I’m happier that these took the damage rather than my parents’ home (where they were stowed away). I hate for so much work to be lost, but these pale in comparison to what others have lost.
